Deer Dirt Scented Soil

DeerDirt Scented Soil

"I shot this 4 1/2 yr old buck after
watching him work a mock scrape
opened with DeerDirt™ on two
mornings in a row"
"DeerDirt™ is great for using with trail cameras
to monitor the bucks in your area. A friend told
me about seeing this buck at a particular woodlot
so I went in with a camera and a box of DeerDirt™.
two days later I had 4 photos of him with his face
in the scrape I made. All of those photos were
taken during daylight hours"

When I wrote my book, Hunting Trophy Whitetails in the Real World, I had practically sworn off scents for hunting mature bucks. I believed that, in most cases, hunting scents would do more harm than good and that most mature bucks would not be fooled by some bottled potion. During the summer of 2006, I was at a hunting show promoting my new book when I met a young man who was promoting a unique scent product. That young man was Jake Lamoreaux and he gave me a package of his "DeerDirt™" to try. I promised him that I would give it a shot, all the while thinking that he was selling another worthless scent product. WAS I EVER WRONG! During the first week of October I made a mock scrape under a single tree that stood along a field edge at least 200 yards from the nearest woods. I wasn't about to contaminate the woods I was hunting with this weird scented dirt, and yet I wanted to keep my word to Jake that I would at least give it a try. I placed a trail camera over this mock scrape and returned 5 days later to see what, if anything, had visited the scrape. I was astounded when I had 156 pictures of deer including more than 10 different bucks and 2 mature monster bucks!

This first experience with Lamoreaux Brothers DeerDirt™ really got me excited and I contacted Jake to get some more. I then spent the entire 2006 hunting season with cameras placed over numerous scrapes made with DeerDirt™. I even killed a 152" 11-point buck on the second consecutive morning that I witnessed him visiting one of my mock scrapes. I could go on with more stories from my first season using DeerDirt™. Suffice it to say that I ended the season with a new tool in my hunting arsenal that I am certain will lead to many more filled tags in the future.
I still believe that some hunters are using scents in such a way that they are actually hurting their chances for success. Bottled liquid scents require a hunter to place it out on every hunt. It lasts only a very short time. DeerDirt™ is different. It is basically a soil that is first mixed with a deer urine scent and then treated with a patented waterproofing agent. Jake Lamoreauxs' father, Mike, developed a waterproof dirt to use on his Montana trapline several years ago and still sells tons of it every year to trappers who use it to keep their traps from freezing. This patented process not only makes DeerDirt™ waterproof but actually helps it to retain its odor. In fact it is guaranteed to last for 30 days but I can attest to the fact that it can last much longer. On top of that a scrape made with DeerDirt™ is soon visited by numerous deer that begin to urinate in it, thus adding even more scent. I have found that my mock scrapes actually show more use from deer as time goes by. One of the biggest drawbacks of hunting scents is that a hunter usually contaminates his hunting area with human odor as he places a hunting scent near his stand on each hunt. With DeerDirt™ a hunter can place a mock scrape near his stand early in the season and never go near it again. Deer using the area become accustomed to visiting the scrape every time they pass nearby. In my opinion it simply makes more sense to use a scent product that is long lasting and requires 1 trip into a hunting area as well as one that actually gets better as time goes by rather than one that quickly fades away.

I did not set out looking to promote any scent product. When I first saw DeerDirt™ I figured it was another gimmick made to separate desperate hunters from their money. I was proven wrong and feel confident in recommending DeerDirt™ to other hunters. It is a great tool for use with trail cameras to monitor bucks in an area or for attracting them near your stand locations. It is not a miracle that will have deer running in to commit suicide but it is a valuable tool that will help a smart hunter see and kill more bucks. I have had great results with all "flavors" of DeerDirt™ and I am now proud to offer it for sale.
